Episode 31-Amaka’s Insult
The party was going well. Tunde and Olamide were busy talking to some businessmen, while Bukola, Gold, and Rita sat together at a table, chatting. Amaka was also sitting with them.
Amaka: “So, Gold, how did you end up marrying Tunde?”
Gold: “What do you mean?”
Amaka: “I mean, looking at you, it’s obvious this wasn’t a love marriage. It must’ve been arranged, right?”
Gold: “Hmm…”
Amaka’s words didn’t sit well with Rita and Bukola, but Gold remained calm.
Amaka: “You know Gold, Tunde was the most popular guy in our college. All the girls were crazy about him and he didn’t like girls like you back then. But look, now he’s married to someone like you!”
Gold: “What do you mean by someone like me?”
Amaka: “Oh, don’t get me wrong…”
Rita: “That’s enough, Amaka. That was college and we’ve all grown up now. Tunde is very happy with Gold and likes her a lot.”
Amaka: “Really? But I don’t see how Tunde could like her.”
Bukola: “Of course, my brother likes her. That’s why they’re married.”
Amaka: “Or maybe he was forced to marry her.”
Gold: “Why do you think our marriage happened out of compulsion?”
Amaka: “It’s obvious. Look at you two—normal couples spend time together but you both act like strangers. Tunde stays away from you and you don’t seem to make much effort to be close to him either.”
Gold didn’t know how to respond.
Amaka: “By the way, our names are quite similar but our personalities are worlds apart. Have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror? Well, you’re lucky Tunde is yours.”
Bukola: “What do you mean? My sister-in-law Gold is far more beautiful than you. At least she’s not a makeup factory like you.”
Amaka: “Excuse me? Did you just call me a makeup factory?”
Bukola: “Yes, because you are.”
Amaka: “Listen, you kid, don’t talk in between.”
Rita: “Both of you, stop it! And Amaka, you can’t talk to Gold like that. She’s Tunde’s wife.”
Amaka: “Yeah, just in name. There’s no real bond between them.”
Rita glared at Amaka angrily, so Amaka softened her tone.
Amaka: “Okay, chill! I was just joking. No need to take it seriously.”
Gold: “It’s fine.”
Amaka: “By the way, what does your father do?”
Gold: “He’s… not alive.”
Amaka: “Not alive? Are you an orphan?”
Hearing about her father brought a painful memory to Gold, but she composed herself and replied softly.
Gold: “My parents passed away in an accident a few years ago.”
Amaka: “Oh… I’m so sorry. I didn’t know that you are an actual orphan.”
Amaka’s harsh words felt like daggers to Gold’s heart.
Just then, Tunde’s voice broke the tension.
Tunde: “She’s not an orphan. She’s my wife and a part of our family.”
Everyone turned to look at Tunde.
Amaka: “Oh, Tunde! Come, sit with us.”
Tunde: “No, I’m fine. I came here to take my wife.”
Gold: “Where are we going?”
Tunde: “Just to meet some people.”
Amaka: “Oh, come on Tunde. Gold will get bored there. Let her stay with us. We were having such a nice conversation.”
Tunde: “I heard all your nice conversations. And yes, you said we don’t have any relationship? So listen. You’re wrong. We have the most special bond.”
Tunde looked at Gold and said, “Friendship! Gold is very special to me because she’s not just my wife but also my best friend.”
Hearing this, Gold couldn’t help but smile.
Rita and Bukola were happy to see Tunde standing up for her.
Turning to Amaka, Tunde said, “I know we’re all friends, but the way you treated my wife wasn’t right. You owe her an apology.”
Amaka: “What? But I…”
Tunde almost screamed, “I said, apologize.”
Amaka: “Fine. I was joking, but if you felt bad, I’m sorry Gold.”
Gold: “It’s okay.”
Tunde took Gold’s hand and led her away.
Amaka was furious at being humiliated, so she started plotting her revenge.
She discreetly handed some money to a waiter, instructing him to do something.
At first, he refused but the large sum of money tempted him.
A few moments later, the waiter returned with a tray of three glasses of soft drinks.
Amaka took out a packet of pills from her purse—intoxicants—and mixed them into one of the glasses. Watching the pills dissolve, a wicked smile spread across her face.
