What Would You Do? (Scenarios): “At 16, She Was Already Married — But Nobody Asked What She Wanted” (part 1)

Maria was sixteen years old. Most girls her age were still in school, laughing with their friends, dreaming of exams or first love. Maria was already married. Her husband, five years older, had been chosen by her father and approved by the older members of the family. No one asked her what she wanted.

They told her that marriage meant respect, security, and honor. But that security came at a price: her freedom, her voice, and the childhood she had barely begun to live. The fear she carried was simple, but heavy: she didn’t know if she was ready to be a wife, a mother, or even someone capable of love. And now they expected her to have children—immediately.

At night, under the thin netting, she would hear her mother’s whispers through the walls and wonder if anyone could see her fear. She thought of the girls she grew up with, the friends who disappeared from school to become wives, many with their first child before the age of eighteen. She didn’t want that life, but tradition was stronger than her desires.

One of those nights, her mother brought up the subject again. “It’s time, Maria. Now you’re a wife. A strong home begins with children,” she said. Maria felt a tightness in her chest. She wanted to speak, to say she wasn’t ready, but the words stuck in her throat.

She knew she had choices, though none seemed truly free. She could obey, start a family and keep the peace with her own, but she would lose her freedom and any hope of returning to school. She could resist, refuse to have a child now, try to maintain some control over her life, but that might bring anger, gossip, or punishment. Or she could run away, escape to gain freedom, but risk everything: safety, family shame, and the unknown dangers that awaited her alone.

Maria stayed awake, contemplating all possible paths. She imagined herself submitting completely—pleasing everyone, becoming the perfect wife and mother, but sacrificing her dreams and her voice. She imagined herself saying no, standing firm, protecting her body and her choices, but hearing whispers behind her back and feeling the weight of her family’s disappointment. And she imagined herself silently fleeing into the darkness, leaving everyone behind, facing the dangers alone just to feel some control over her own life.

And you, what would you do if you were Maria? Would you obey? Did you resist? Did you run away? Stop for a moment and imagine yourself in their shoes.

The night was dark and silent. Maria slowly left the room, her heart pounding, the small bundle of clothes in her hand. Each step felt heavy, but each step was towards something she couldn’t yet name. She moved silently through the village, shadows stretching along the paths she had always known, wondering if freedom would bring joy, fear, or both.

She thought about the dangers that might lie ahead—strangers on the road, people who would judge her, the uncertainty of finding a place to sleep. She thought about her family, who would wake up in the morning and find her missing, probably angry, probably scared, probably ashamed. And she thought about herself, unsure if she would have enough courage to survive the choice she had made.

The moonlight reflected on the path ahead, making it seem both short and endless. Maria’s heart raced. She heard the distant laughter of her younger sister from the previous day, reminding her that the life she was leaving behind would never be the same again.

In the distance, a dog barked. The wind carried the scent of campfires and damp earth. Maria paused for a moment, held her breath, listening. Every sound, every shadow, seemed like a test—every second could change everything.

She took another step forward. A small step, then another, towards an unknown future. And she realized, deep down, that whatever awaited her, she couldn’t turn back.

But what exactly awaited her? Would she find safety? Would she survive the night and the choices she had made? Would freedom be a relief, or something heavier than the life she was leaving behind?

The answers lay there in the darkness, and Maria had to keep walking to discover them.

What awaits her in the darkness? Will she find safety, or will escape place her in even greater danger?
